We arrived only four days after Hurricane Matthew and they had the park cleaned up and ready for visitors. We enjoyed the 4 miles of bike trails, and we noticed the thousands of Christmas light displays throughout the park. It must be amazing here during the holidays! We took the $10 shuttle into town both days and enjoyed an historic walking tour (Dennis Stiles) and a trip out to Ft. Sumter. Charleston is charming, and this is the perfect home base for your visit.

Kudos to the city for this great park. Most of the sites are level and in the shade. Huge dog parks. One for big dogs & one for 20 lbs or under. Laundry is outside under a roof over. It is clean and inexpensive. Great place to ride bikes. Can't say enough good things about this place. Would stay here again when in the area.

This park is one of the best! Miles and miles of beautiful paved trails, kayak and bike rentals, large dog park on a lake and at Christmas a phenomenal light show! Shuttle into Charleston is icing on the cake. Will make this an annual destination!

We planned our trip around the availablity of a site at this park. The park did not disappoint too much. It is similar to good State Parks. Fantastic bike trails. Claus and Mary Helen teach a great crabbing class. We loved going to the giant dog park and watching the dogs play in the pond. The store was well stocked and the staff there was friendly. We also enjoyed going to the fishing pier and trying our hand at crabbing and watching the sunset. The location is withing 30 minutes of all the good sites. We enjoyed walking around the old town, Folly Beach, Partiot's Point, and the Fort Sumter sunset cruise. If you stay there and do not go to Ritas on Folly Beach for the Shrimp & Grits, you are missing out. The bad...they were working on the fushing pier and we were told we could not use it one morning. There was no communication with the campground to let people know it was closed so we bought bait and were turned away. The water park looks good, but is $9 a person to use, is 4.5' deep at the deepest, and they bus in hundreds of rowdy kids.

This county park is the standard others should strive to become. Great camping rates considering a hotel in the historic district runs around $250 and up. Full hook ups, wifi, bicycle rentals, Splash Park and so much more. The park even runs a shuttle to the historic district for $10.00 round trip. The only real downfall of the shuttle is leaving at 9:00 am and pick up to return is at 4:00pm. I shall return.

This is a great place to stay. The RV park is nice with big trees and large sites. But what really makes this a great place to stay is the county park that it is situated in. Miles of walking/biking trails. Lots of wooded areas, ponds, open fields for sports, playgrounds for kids, kayaking, etc. The off-leash dog park is fantastic; several acres and a pond with a beach for the dogs to play on. There is a small store with a good selection of necessities and memorabilia. We got a cheaper deal for staying longer than a week, plus I think we got an off-season rate of $33 a night. The wireless Internet was OK but not great. At peak times it could be very slow.

This campground is amazing. Its a county park and has great camping sites with lots of trees and pull thru's. Did not check out the bathrooms or showers as we normally just use the coach's. Very close to downtown Charleston. Would stay here again. Would be great for kids, as there is a water park and rock climbing wall, lots of bike paths. The only issues were the roads getting to the park had lots of low hanging trees. Our antenna's were hitting everything, our rig is 12'6" tall, would be very concerned if you had one of the taller coaches. Roads in the park had no such issues.

This is a wonderful campground with miles and miles of trails. Facilities are great and there is a shuttle (only $10 round trip) into charleston historic district. We just missed the holiday light show but saw the displays around the grounds and will definitely get here in time (jan1) next year. This is a fantastic place to stay if you are visiting charleston.

I have absolutely nothing bad to say about this place. Best park thus far!! Came all the way from Ca. This park has SO many things to offer. The dog park is awesome. This park deserves 10 stars!!!!

Great sites, water park, dog park, friendly people. Tons to do, bike trails etc... Really awesome place!

This campground is situated in a huge, wonderful park. The park has a huge pool and waterside, a climbing wall and a humongous off leash dog park with a beach. The campsites are large and in a wooded area. Couldn't get satellite to work. Would definitely return.

This is a large park with the usual amenities. I would question the pool listing. It's really a water park for the kiddies and it's expensive. They could do a better job at cleaning the bathhouse. Once a day just doesn't cut it with a full park.

We will be definitely coming back to this place! Many, many things for the kids to do. Trails, water park next door, very clean. Don't hesitate to come here.

Spent a week here in 4/17. About the nicest park I've been to. (Only rving for a year. About 9-10 times). Will return in 4/18. Real nice setting. Great dog park. Have driven thru when they have Xmas lights up. Beautiful. I hear it's tough to get a spot during Xmas lights show though. Water park on grounds. Heard it's $$$. Think might get a break if you stay at campground.

We came to this camp because my wife wanted to see Charleston, South Carolina. The first hint that this was a bad idea was it took us one hour to travel one mile to the camp ground. Two there were no signs to direct you to you assigned site. Three the lighting along your route was poorly lit. We Will Never Come Back Here Again!!!!

This CG is seriously overpriced compared to other gov't parks along the coast. I paid $111.72 for two nights, back in, FHU. The bath / laundry is being remodeled and closed until April 2018 yet there is no seasonal or inconvenience discount. The landscaping is out of control and branches are unavoidable. Considering the county is profiting over a million a year off the CG alone, you would think they could pour some cement pads on the sites and update the utility boxes. The spigots are so close to the ground (and sewer hole) you have to get on your knees to hook up. I called to say that I would be extending and would come in to the office at lunch to pay. The next morning I received a call demanding payment at 11:12. I raced back to find a note on my door, as well. Necessary? Really? The location to the historical district and the dog park are great, but this place is not worth the price, IMO. There is overnight RV parking at the Charleston Visitors Center for $16 and they have a cute park across the street to walk your dogs. .

Large sites, better than average wifi, friendly staff, and several walking trails. Close to Charleston and Folly beach. One of the nicer campgrounds we have stayed at. Class A and fifth wheels may find some of the roads leading to the park a little tight.

Holy Moly! Getting here is a big rig nightmare! Charleston roads are chock full of big overhanging trees. We heard one ding after another hitting who knows what, and dodging was impossible especially on the two-lane roads. Once in the park, there are still lots of trees, not necessarily over the road, but making it tight to get into some of the sites. Sites vary widely from huge, wide and long sites to short and narrow. Some are buddy sites (like 101 which was our first site) so you are right next to your neighbor. The pull thru sites are the most big rig friendly – if you can stand the harrowing drive to get here. All sites are basically sand with a tad of gravel mixed in. Most sites are fairly level with side to side issues the main factor. Full hookups which is great. Satellite is not possible in the majority of sites due to trees. We were able to get Directv in site 115 by jockeying around a little. Verizon 4g 1-2 bars but it jumps around. Campground WII FI is unusable. It is a quiet campground for the most part (when we were here during the off season) except for the military jets flying around. As others have mentioned, lots of things for kids to do. There is a bike path around the park that is pretty flat. It is pricey – it would have been about $50 a night but we got a good discount due to bathroom renovations. The park is very convenient to downtown Charleston and Folly Beach. It is a busy, busy park with sites almost immediately occupied as someone else left.

Site#55. Very scenic and peaceful. Great place for family and bike rides through paved paths. Coming soon is a spectacler water park. FHU worked great and gravel site was well maintained and level. As always in SC, watch out for the red ants beds as they are plentiful.

Huge shady campsite (#4) is very private, yet next to store, trail and bathroom/laundry. It is a tad pricy. Great dog park and trails, roomy picnic area, splash park for little ones, cottages/conference center . . . This is a very well-thought-out park 20 minutes from Charleston. Just bring your bug spray!

We're just headed home from a long weekend at James Island County Park. We loved it. Nice location. Lots to do in the park. Clean, bright, newly refurbished bathhouses. Beautiful shaded sites.. we were in #47 and it was perfect. Some of the pull-thrus didn't have a lot of room. Walking distance to a huge playground and a water play area for the kids. Fishing, crabbing and dog beach.. FHU was great, wifi wasn't really working.

$50/night with senior discount is a steal for this gem of a park. So much to do, see and hear here. Great trails for bike or hike. My dog loved the dog park. Showers were recently updated and plenty of hot water.
By user-5307725... on 2019-08-09.
Very much like a nice state park only with full hookups. Miles of trails, fishing with no license allowed, everyone very nice. There are lots of overhead limbs on city streets coming to park but our motorhome is just over 13 feet high and we didn't hit anything. Would stay here again.

This park is huge and well maintained. The bathrooms were recently redone and they are great. The dog park here is the nicest I ve ever seen. It has to be several acres and has a lake and a beach. My dogs were in heaven. The WiFi isn t great but I ve yet to find a campground where it is...will definitely be back!

Great experience for newbies at our first stop on 6 month adventure. Spacious level sites with FHU. Wonderful biking and walking paths. Bathrooms are new and well maintained. Super nice staff. Location was perfect for exploring Charleston and nearby sites. We stayed over Christmas when Festival of Lights was happening. Beautiful but.... need to be back in park by 4 to avoid waiting in spectator line. They should have a separate entrance for campers as we were tardy one night and waited almost 2 hours in line!

This is without a doubt the best campground with a wonderful park attached. And then, you have a short ride into downtown Charleston . Great bike trails there is a splash pad for kids and a water park in season. There is a huge dog park and many open spaces and a dock for fishing or crabbing.

RV PARKY APP DOES NOT PROVIDE A SAFE ROUTE TO ENTER THIS CAMPGROUND. There are several small roads to the main Rd, but there is only 1 truly accessible and that's with extreme caution. The main road entering James Island Campground is a scenic HWY canopied with large sprawling live oak trees. The county does not maintain these trees due to it being deemed a scenic HWY. Hence, BEWARE to those pulling anything taller 12.5 ft...After speaking with multiple people with damage, we fared well only due to stopping traffic & swerving/driving on the wrong side of the road. That being said, this campground has beautiful grounds with much to do! Wonderful place for families. Paved bike trails, fishing & activities galore. Campsites are clean, roomy and ALL sites have fire ring & picnic table. We, however, will not choose to camp here again due to the potential damage that could incur to our camper.
