| Restful during off-season.

Contrary to geographic expectation, this park is NOT full of oil workers...at least now that there is a slow down in the industry. There were only a couple of other campers here during my stay the week before the season officially begins...which is today. The staff is accommodating and the park is well maintained. The new full hookup area, Plover Loop, has some beautiful views of the lake on the west side bank, but unfortunately the area is all dirt at this time because they laid seed instead of sod. The old full hookup area, Pintail, has some great pull-through sites, as well as back-in, but bring an extra 100' of water hose because the spigots have been installed in highly inconvenient tracks that defy all RV accessibility. The electric is newer and the WiFi router is located at the comfort station. The internet and NPR is the only sources of entertainment out here unless you have a dish and an open site, as I could not pick up any OTA channels. The hiking trails are clear and level two, at best. The views are great in some areas and park benches have been installed at many vantage points. Although the tick population can be bad in this region, our issues were minimal compared to parks further south. There is a lot of lakefront shoreline to walk along and a swimming area. However, the water is brown, full of sticks, and may be contaminated by fracking chemicals, all things considered and my unprofessional geo opinion. Swim at your own risk. On average, the moon rises about 50 minutes later here due to the northern proximity, so you get more time to play outside, but may find it difficult to sleep if you are an early bird. The fracking flames light up the prairie and are a sight to behold...who needs a campfire? This state park is well managed and they seem to be committed to making continuous sustainable improvements, such as the planting of trees. Although this is not a vacation destination area, this park is the only natural choice to stay at if one has to be near Williston.

This is one top notch camp ground. Hot showers, spacious lots, quiet surrounding and beautiful landscape to hike around. Informative staff who pick the best spot to suit your needs, like WiFi.
